I get to do art with the single moms. Three years ago, this one mom shifted my entire world. Currently, she's in grad school, but at the time she had doubts about finishing her BS in geophysics. She was curious about earthquakes...how do gigantic masses of mother earth move? I took a photo of her - she is walking with a fractured ankle and chasing her daughter. See what I see? An overpowering landscape and a strong woman built to take it on. She's walking solo in a shin splint-not giving notice to the pain of her injury. The last night of the retreat, she insisted taking out the garbage. Do you know what it feels like to be told by a single mom, that she INSISTS? I do. She took out every bag of garbage to the street in the dark, alone. After one of my workshops, her four-year-old daughter tells me, “black is in the back!” I asked her to repeat it to make sure I got it right, "Black is in the back, and then it opens up, like a notebook with pages!" I sat stunned. Listen beyond the words: Broken. Splinted. Chasing. The dark. Taking out garbage. Moving beyond pain. Alone. Insists. Four-year-old knows. Art teacher learns. Black opens up.
